It’s a mixture of flourishing rhetoric, promises he’ll never keep, propaganda, and policies not based in reality.
It’s really long. I mean, really long. Like “Leo Tolstoy would’ve written a shorter speech” long.
Obama calls for ending tax subsidies for oil companies…in order to give them to “green” energy companies.
He says “nonpartisan economists” have concluded that repealing ObamaCare will increase the deficit by $250 billion. He says certain, small changes are okay but ObamaCare by and large should be left alone. He plays the “let’s not refight old battles” canard.
He calls for higher taxes on the “wealthy”, saying it’s not about punishing personal success but promoting national success. Comrades, give up the fruits of your labor for the greater good of the Mother Country!
He calls for major investments in infrastructure spending like internet access and high-speed rail. He wants 80% of Americans to have access to high-speed rail within 25 years.
He effectively advocates for the DREAM Act, saying the children of illegal aliens “enrich” the country and shouldn’t be punished for past illegal activity.
He calls for more respect for teachers and encourages children to become teachers in order to help children. Talks about school reform with few details.
Says we need to balance our budget but warns against cuts to education, infrastructure, any entitlement reforms that would effect benefits, and other liberal pet issues. Brags about his administration significantly cutting defense spending, though.
Overall, his speech is longer than the Gettysburg Address, Constitution, or Declaration of Independence.
Update: David Plouffe, a top Obama political aide, probably could have worded this better:
“What the president really wanted to do tonight is tell a story to the American people.”
It’s a story all right. But so was Harry Potter.
