An Iraqi immigrant to the United States is on trial in Phoenix for allegedly murdering his daughter, who he believed had become too westernized. It’s the latest example of a Muslim honor killing in the United States.

Prosecutors say it was an “honor killing” because the defendant thought his daughter had become too westernized.

20-year-old Noor Almaleki was run over in the middle of a Peoria parking lot back in 2009. Prosecutors say her dad intentionally drove into his daughter, and another woman, and sped off. The defense said Monday Faleh Almaleki intended only to spit out the window at the other woman as he drove by, but miscalculated.

It happened in broad daylight, with a lot of people around. In court Tuesday, several witnesses testified about what they saw.

“I could see the lady on the ground,” recalls Charles Cooper, who was standing outside his office having a cigarette. He says he heard an engine rev, and then an SUV plow into two women walking across the parking lot…

Faleh Almaleki allegedly ran down his daughter for dishonoring the family. Family members say Almaleki was angry with Noor because she wouldn’t adhere to strict Iraqi and Muslim traditions.

The father left the country after the killing. He was later arrested in London and extradited to the United States. His defense team insists it was an accident, despite witnesses saying he was visibly angry when he drove his car into his daughter. And despite the fact he was obviously trying to get away with it.

As Ace says, ain’t multiculturalism grand? Think of how unenriched our society would be if we didn’t have fathers murdering their daughters because they were “westernized”.
