Superman to Renounce American Citizenship, Become Globalist Fighter for Peace

by Stephan Tawney on April 27, 2011

He’s now part of the universal community of drum circle members. Seriously, he renounces his citizenship and declares himself to be a member of the universal community. Not. Kidding.

Goyer’s installment, with tense art from Miguel Sepulveda, steals the spotlight in Action Comics No. 900. When Superman drops in on an Iranian protest to stand with demonstrators in an act of nonviolent civil disobedience, the U.S. government takes him to task for acting as an instrument of national policy. Superman responds by renouncing his American citizenship and proclaiming himself a citizen of the universe…

In an age rife with immigration paranoia, it’s refreshing to see an alien refugee tell the United States that it’s as important to him as any other country on Earth — which in turn is as important to Superman as any other planet in the multiverse.

The genius of Superman is that he belongs to everyone, for the dual purposes of peace and protection. He’s above ephemeral geopolitics and nationalist concerns, a universal agent unlike any other found in pop culture.

Kumbaya!

Except Superman was never supposed to stand for everything and everyone. His tagline was “truth, justice, and the American way”. Not the “United Nations and international peace movement way”. Truth. Justice. American way. As in, he stood for the way of Americans. Oddly enough. Not Iranians or Palestinians. Americans. And their way.

A great question from Allahpundit, who notes that comic books writers have been taking a left-wing, globalist turn with famous superheroes as of late:

This is a more modest tweak on that idea, and intriguing insofar as his disaffection stems from American paralysis towards Middle East tyrants. I wonder how Supes felt about Saddam.

Yeah, funny how this revisionist crap seems to have missed the Bush era of removing dictators and other tyrannical governments. Since we’re all about standing with people yearning to be free from the claw of dictators, surely Superman loved Bush, right? Or not.
