The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in the United States has hit $3.91 — less than a dime short of that dreaded $4 per gallon mark. It’s a jump of 2 cents over 24 hours and represents the highest price for gasoline in years.

So when can we expect $4 per gallon? According to the Associated Press, we’re on course to hit that level on May 8th. In nine states they already pay an average of $4 per gallon. Another 13 states have average prices between $3.90 and $4.00 per gallon.
