ISLAMABAD (BNO NEWS) -- A poverty-hit Pakistani father has been arrested after he confessed to police that he drowned his four children in a river last week, local media reported on Tuesday.

The murders happened last week amid financial worries and after Javed Shah had an argument with the family of his wife. He then took the four children, the youngest just three years old, and drowned them in the Phuleli River in Hyderabad, the second largest city of Pakistan's Sindh province.

It was not known what Shah and his wife's family argued about. According to SAMAA Television, the mother of the children soon after went to police, after which Shah was arrested and confessed to drowning the children. The bodies of the children were found a day later.

Police have identified the victims as 3-year-old Ali, 4-year-old Kainat, 6-year-old Neha, and 8-year-old Dhanu.
