What possible legitimate reason could Iran have had for suddenly revoking permission for Angela Merkel’s plane to enter Iranian airspace? Tehran specifically denied Merkel’s plane permission, allowing her less notable cabinet’s plan to enter without issue. So the problem wasn’t with Iran’s airspace.

It seems likely that Iran simply revoked permission in order to cause trouble. To stick one to the western, female leader (she’s a double threat). She was already in the air and so could do nothing but abide by Tehran’s last minute decision. It’s a petty and cowardly move. But par for the course for Tehran.
