Wisconsin Board Ratifies Recall Petitions for Republicans — But Not Democrats

by Stephan Tawney on May 31, 2011

They managed to ratify the petitions submitted by the union establishment to recall Republican legislators for actually doing their jobs and debating and voting on legislation.

But they can’t manage to meet the deadline for approving the petitions submitted by ordinary folks to recall Democratic legislators for fleeing the state (literally) rather than debating and voting on legislation.

That despite the fact that several of the recall petitions against Republicans were filed after those filed against Democrats.

Yeah, no, nothing suspicious there at all.

State election officials on Tuesday approved recall elections against three Republican senators Tuesday but put off decisions on certifying recall petitions against three Democrats…

In April, Dane County Circuit Judge John W. Markson agreed to extend the deadline on calling the elections until this Friday.

Now, board officials plan to return to court to ask for another extension because they say they can’t meet the Friday deadline for the three Democrats. Falk said a court hearing was likely Wednesday or Thursday, and at that time the board will request permission to certify any additional recall elections next week.

The board had been working under a plan to hold all recall elections on July 12. If there were more than one challenger in any race, the July 12 election would become a primary, and the general recall election would be Aug. 9.

If the judge agrees to the new deadline, and the board found recall elections should be held against the Democrats, those elections would be held a week later – on July 19. If there were multiple challengers, the July 19 election would become a primary and the general recall election would be Aug. 16.

So they managed to process the petitions to recall Republicans, but the same number filed to recall Democrats? Oh, sorry, they can’t meet that deadline. Oops. Their bad.

So they’re moving ahead with legitimate petitions against Republicans while, oopsy, they’re not doing the same for legitimate petitions against Democrats. Not a single Democrat, yet every single Republican. What a coincidence.

As things are now, it’s entirely possible that the judge refuses a deadline shift. So we could be looking at the suppression of a legitimate effort to recall Democrats, while Democrats get the chance to recall Republicans. A one-way street.

The unions and their allies are going to play hardball to the end. They couldn’t win in the legislature, they couldn’t win at the ballot box, and they couldn’t even win in the race for recall petitions. But they’ll try to rig the process every step of the way, as they’ve done.

First the union cronies fled the state to shutdown the democratic process. They failed utterly.

Next they slimed and tried to oust a respected judge so they could overturn the legislation in the courts. They failed, again, utterly.

Now they’re trying to prevent voters from having the opportunity to recall Democrats while ensuring that the chance exists to recall Republicans.

Sleezy. Corrupt. And just what we expected from the union establishment.
