Before anyone gets too excited, keep in mind that this guy is nearly as flawed as Romney. For a number of reasons. He’s a great communicator, don’t get me wrong. But a short list of problems with him includes:
- He voted for the auto bailout. You know, the one that spent billions of taxpayer dollars saving union-infested Government Motors and Chrysler. After billions of dollars spent, GM and Chrysler went into bankruptcy anyway.
- He’s not a solid free trader. He’s supported a few free trade agreements, but he’s also voted for tariffs and opposed CAFTA.
- He’s a union supporter. Besides the auto bailout thing, unions are heavy in his district — and he’s been well-aware of that. He was one of just 13 Republicans to vote for legislation to make it easier for unions to take over workplaces.
Bad on free trade. Bad on allowing the market to work. Bad on restricting the power of union bosses. These are critical flaws, and any debate on whether or not to support McCotter must address these issues.
Like I said, he’s a great communicator and would be an excellent shill for the eventual nominee. He should even have a spot in the next GOP administration. There are plenty of areas where his policies are just right.
But as far as being the party’s nominee…I’d have to see some serious polling showing him kicking Obama’s ass. If he’s capable of beating Obama with somewhat of a comfortable margin, I’ll overlook his issues. But if we need to go to the mat and down to the wire to compete? No thanks.
