Coburn Plan Raises Taxes, Guts Defense

by Stephan Tawney on July 18, 2011

Yeah…no thanks.

It seems Senator Tom Coburn jumped back into the debt ceiling debate in time to make an even dumber proposal than the one to simply raise the debt ceiling without cuts.

He wants to reform entitlements somewhat…but he also wants to gut defense and end tax deductions for health coverage and home mortgages.

He wants $1 trillion (with a “T”) in defense spending cuts and another $1 trillion in tax hikes. Neither of which we can afford as China’s military power grows, Iran pursues nuclear weapons, and the economy continues to drag.

Fiscally conservative group Americans for Tax Reform has already fired a volley against the plan, noting its massive tax increases and citing Coburn’s previous support for tax hikes.

On the defense front, Coburn wants to reduce our nuclear stockpile, cut back on our modernization programs, cut back on the size of the military, and cut the military’s health coverage.

So there’s something for everyone to hate! Liberals will oppose the deal because it touches ever-so-slightly on welfare, and conservatives will hate the legislation because it hikes taxes and guts defense.

Coburn took a whole bunch of crappy proposals, combined them into a super-crappy proposal, and wasted his own time and ours. Congratulations, senator. Now please go to the back of the line.

How epically crappy is this proposal?

Neocons will hate the tax hikes and defense cuts; Paleocons will hate the tax hikes; pro-defense liberals will hate the welfare reform and defense cuts; pacifist liberals will hate the welfare reform and spending cuts; red state Democrats will hate the defense cuts, tax hikes, and welfare reform; and Independents will hate a mixture of all of that.

Coburn would have had to really strive to create a crappier, more universally-loathed series of propositions. This should go in the pantheon of crappiness. Many years from now the Crappyites — apostles of the crappiness of this proposal — will worship at the bottom of a statue of this crappy proposal. That’s how bad it is.
