This Day in History: Ted Kennedy Kills Mary Jo Kopechne

by Scott Gibbons on July 18, 2011

A reminder: On this day in 1969, a drunk Ted Kennedy drove his Oldsmobile Delmont 88 off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island and left his passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne, to drown.

Kennedy managed to get himself out of the sinking vehicle but left Kopechne to die. She did. And he failed to seek help or report the incident until the next morning, when authorities located his vehicle and her body.

Thanks to the political influence of his family, Kennedy skipped punishment. He was found guilty only of leaving the scene of an accident and received a two-month suspended sentence. He was never charged or investigated for drunk-driving.

On this day in 1969, Senator Edward M. “Ted” Kennedy killed a young and beautiful woman with a promising future. And he got away with it thanks to his political connections.

Mary Jo Kopechne: 1940-1969. Rest in peace.

One of the reasons, but not the only, that the Kopechne’s can be assured that Mary Jo and “Teddy” are in different places in the afterlife. (Just decided to be a little civil there. I think the reader knows where I believe Senator Kennedy is. It also begins with H, but it is only a four letter word)
