The Canton police officer who threatened to kill a legally-armed American citizen has been identified as Officer Daniel Harless. Harless has been placed on leave pending an investigation by internal affairs. Canton Police Chief Dean McKimm has issued a statement condemning the officer’s actions.
The victim, now identified as William Barlett, was legally carrying a weapon when he was pulled over by Harless in early June. Bartlett attempted to notify the officer of his gun possession, but the officer repeatedly stopped him.
After removing Barlett from the vehicle, the officer spotted the weapon and immediately handcuffed the concealed-carry permit holder. Officer Harless proceeded to threaten to summarily execute Barlett for not identifying his weapon possession.
“I could blast you right in the mouth,” the officer said. “I am so close to caving in your God d— head.”
“It’s how f—ing cops get killed.”
Once inside the police car, the officer continues the rant, saying, “I tell you what I should have done. As soon as I saw your gun, I should have taken two steps back, pulled my Glock 40, and just put 10 bullets in your ass and let you drop. And I wouldn’t have lost any sleep.”
Harless also told Barlett that he would be charged with a felony and would lose his concealed-carry permit. Harless and another officer continued verbally blasting Barlett for not identifying his status — despite Barlett’s repeated attempts to do just that.
The other officer involved in the scandal has yet to be identified. Barlett has been charged with two misdemeanors — one a traffic violation and the other for not identifying himself as a concealed carrier. The latter charge is likely to be dropped now that the video has surfaced.

I’d like to point out that Bartlett was not “pulled over” by Ofc. Harless as the article says. It was not a traffic stop. Bartlett’s vehicle was parked along the curb. It appears that Ofc. Harless had no probable cause to detain anyone here…where or what was the violation? Suspicion alone is not probable cause.
