Chad Pergram, top Capitol Hill reporter for Fox News, reports that Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) may be about to sell-out his party’s conservative base.
Apparently the latest plan is to increase the national debt by $900 billion with just $1.2 trillion in discretionary spending caps. In other words, no entitlement reform. Entitlements are non-discretionary spending.
What would conservatives get? “A” vote on the Balanced Budget Amendment by the end of the year. And the formation of a bicameral committee to suggest more cuts and report back by December.
In short, conservatives get next-to-nothing. Barack Obama gets a $900 billion debt increase and entitlements left alone. It seems Boehner is now concentrating on winning Democratic votes rather than overcoming Democratic opposition.
Boehner has done this before. He was supposed to cut $100 billion in spending for the remainder of last year’s budget. He ended up settling for a small fraction of that. Despite the fact Republicans campaigned on that promise.
Boehner has a history of wimping-out and folding under left-wing pressure. If he does it again, well, it may be time to find another speaker. And another representative for Ohio’s 8th district.
