Usually Democrats opposing a plan would indicate its worthiness. But not this time. This time it’s the case that the plan is too horrid for either side to support, albeit for different reasons.
Democrats oppose the plan because it forces them to confront the debt issue before the next election. They’d rather put that off until after 2012. And you can imagine why.
Conservatives — including Club for Growth and Heritage Action — oppose the plan because it gives Obama upwards of a $900 billion debt increase while cutting almost nothing of significance. And entitlement reform is out.
So a big congratulations to John Boehner. You’ve proposed a plan that only you and Barack Obama find attractive. Your conservative base, members of your caucus, Senate Democrats, and conservative organizations oppose it.
Job well done.
