Kandahar Mayor Assassinated in Suicide Attack

by Stephan Tawney on July 27, 2011

Ghulam Haider Hamidi, mayor of Afghanistan’s second largest city, Kandahar, has been been assassinated. He was killed by a suicide bomber who detonated explosives in the hallway of Hamidi’s office. A bodyguard was also wounded in the attack.

No group has yet stepped forward to claim responsibility for the assassination.

This is the second high-profile assassination in Afghanistan in as many weeks. Ahmad Wali Karzai, brother of the Afghan president and provincial council chief, was killed in his own house by his own bodyguard. The Taliban were responsible for that brutal attack.
