Senate to Obama: Back Off the Second Amendment

by Stephan Tawney on July 27, 2011

Rather than directly push gun control legislation through Congress, President Barack Obama wants the U.S. Senate to ratify the UN Arms Trade Treaty, which would trample all over the Second Amendment.

In response, dozens of members of the United States Senate — enough to block ratification — have written to the White House warning that treaties which infringe on the Second Amendment will go nowhere.

Two separate letters were sent. The first, which was drafted by Senator Jon Tester (D-MT), was cosigned by 13 members — all of them Democrats. The second letter, drafted by Senator Jerry Moran (R-KS), was signed by 45 senators — all Republicans.

Combined, more than half of the United States Senate has publicly announced its opposition to any Second Amendment-infringing treaties. That would make it impossible for the treaty to achieve ratification, which requires 67 votes in favor.
