Boehner Still Short Votes on Debt Plan

by Stephan Tawney on July 28, 2011

Members of the House Republican caucus are saying that Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) is still a couple of votes short on his debt plan, which would increase debt by $1 trillion in exchange for just $22 billion in deficit reduction.

Congressman Allen West (R-FL) says he’s told leaderships is still “two short” — the same position as several hours ago.

Meanwhile, Congressman Michael Burgess (R-TX) was asked by a reporter if the votes are there. His response? If they were there we’d be upstairs voting.

Another House Republican — a supporter of the Boehner plan — says this late vote was the result of “piss-poor whip operation”. In other words, leadership screwed up in securing votes.
