Fine: Pass the Boehner Resolution

by Stephan Tawney on July 28, 2011

With the U.S. Senate promising to block John Boehner’s weak-ass plan, I’ve come to grudgingly semi-support the House passing the legislation. We can’t risk taking the blame for a downgrade, and we have to demonstrate that it’s Democrats who are being obstructionists — not us.

But that having been said, I’m not going to pretend the bill is good in any way. It cuts almost nothing, achieves absolutely no entitlement reform, and yet further indebts us to the tune of $1 trillion. I don’t trust Boehner and his cronies to follow through on entitlement reform promises even for a second. They’ve done nothing to earn trust.

Boehner is weak and, frankly, should be replaced as speaker. He fights to a point and then, just as Democrats are coming under pressure, he finds some way to retreat and thoroughly disappoint those who elected him. Worse yet, he lies to our faces about how much his plans actually cut and/or reform. He’s weak against Democrats and lies to us.

I’m also sick and tired of Boehner and his cronies demanding conservatives sit down and shut up. Boehner would still be the minority leader — if even that — if not for the conservative activists and voters he and his supporters so quickly put down. He wants our support and then wants us to sit down and shut up until the next election. Screw him.

What was I saying? Oh yes, semi-supporting his proposed legislation. It’s out of political calculation rather than approval of his selling-out. And there are political scores to settle after this current debates passes. His role as speaker needs to be reevaluated. And the rest of the party better start seriously pushing for entitlement reform.
