The House of Representatives will now alter Speaker John Boehner’s (R-OH) debt plan before it’s brought up to a vote, according to reports from the hill. The bill has been sent back to committee for alterations reportedly including a stronger Balanced Budget Amendment and cuts to the Pell Grant provision. It’s not clear how many [...]

Members of the House Republican caucus are saying that Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) is still a couple of votes short on his debt plan, which would increase debt by $1 trillion in exchange for just $22 billion in deficit reduction. Congressman Allen West (R-FL) says he’s told leaderships is still “two short” — the same [...]

The man who plotted to copy Nidal Hassan’s attack on Fort Hood has an interesting history. It turns out he became a hero to the anti-war movement (and some media outlets) for his previous attempts to avoid being deployed by claiming conscientious objector status. Pfc. Nasser Abdo, the 21-year-old soldier arrested Thursday in connection with [...]

House Delays Vote on Boehner Plan

28. July 2011

Apparently the whip count is still short. Twenty-five Republicans are “no” or leaning “no”. Boehner can only afford to lose twenty-four and still have the bill pass. So, for now, it’s delayed. The House has moved on to other business. Update: The House is now considering a resolution to name a post office in Peoria, [...]

While we’re trashing Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) for barely holding a coalition together for his plan in the House, let’s remember that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) can’t get his plan through his chamber, either. In the Senate, Democrats control fifty-three seats. Sixty votes are needed to overcome a filibuster. There has been no [...]

28. July 2011

I’m linking to ThinkProgress but they’re linking to and citing other, more reliable outlets. They also provide each and every name, linked to a statement by the individual congressman opposing the bill. Why is this relevant? Because if 25 Republicans vote “no”, then the bill can’t pass the House. I think the magic number is [...]

A new poll from the Pew Research Center finds very bad news for Team Obama: A full 54% of Americans now disapprove of his job performance. It’s the first time in his presidency than such an anti-Obama majority has existed. Just 36% of Indies say they approve of his job performance. And it gets worse [...]

Harry Reid’s Press Secretary: “Boehner’s bill dies tonight. Forever.”

Adam Jentleson, press secretary for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), posts to Twitter: Boehner’s bill dies tonight. Forever. Indeed, Senate Democrats intend to immediately kill Speaker Boehner’s plan to raise the debt ceiling in return for small cuts to the budget. Why? Because Democrats, not wanting to revisit the issue before the next election, [...]
