First Person Killed in London Riots

by Stephan Tawney on August 9, 2011

The London riots have claimed their first victim: A 26-year-old man shot in his vehicle, Reuters reports. How the man was shot hasn’t been reported.

The riots were supposedly sparked by the killing of a man by police, but they quickly evolved into anarchy as countless young, opportunistic rioters looted private property and attacked bystanders.

The situation has become bad enough that police from across the country are being brought in and the army may be dispatched if the situation worsens further.

Prime Minister David Cameron and Deputy Minister Nick Clegg have called a meeting of top government officials to deal with the unfolding crisis.

So much for the peaceful British people who respect law enforcement and enjoy low crime rates thanks to gun control, huh? Perhaps it’s time to reconsider those stereotypes.

Update: London police say 525 people have been arrested, and more than 100 criminally charged, since the riots began.
