Obama’s Armored Buses Cost $2.2 Million

by Stephan Tawney on August 16, 2011

I speak, of course, of the buses being used on his taxpayer-funded I’ll Totally Create Jobs Any Day Now If Only You’ll Reelect Me But This Totally Isn’t A Campaign Event tour. Another multi-million dollar project that actually accomplishes nothing.

The agency initially declined to tell TPM whom the buses were bought from, but based on some searches of federal databases it looked to me like the seller was Hemphill Brothers Coach Co. of Whites Creek, Tenn. Last July, the Service signed a contract for nearly $2.2 million with the firm, according to a federal procurement database. (The entry doesn’t specify the number of buses.)

“The contract you found is the contract,” Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan said Thursday morning. “It’s two buses for $1.1 million each.”

The Secret Service says the other bus will totally be used by the Republican nominee when the time comes. I’ll believe that when I see it. Obama would receive top priority as the incumbent president, and I’m sure his sleezy campaign can manage to find a use for the second bus.

But regardless, did we really need armored buses added to the fleet? Were the armored SUVs, armored limos, fleet of planes and helicopters, were all of those not sufficient?

And does no one recognize the irony of Obama demanding the “rich” join everyone else in sacrificing while he goes around in multi-million dollar buses on a taxpayer-funded road trip?

Furthermore, are these hybrid buses? Do they meet Obama’s new CAFE standard goal? Or is everyone supposed to be fuel efficient…except him. Funny how that works.
