Report: Businessman Shot for Being Non-Union

by Stephan Tawney on August 17, 2011

A businessman who owns the largest non-union electrical company in his neck of the woods was reportedly shot on Wednesday morning over non-unions status.

Last Wednesday, however, the attacks on Mr. King became much more serious when he was awakened late in the evening at his home in Monroe County, Michigan and saw that the motion lights in his driveway had come on. When he looked out his front window, he saw a figure near his SUV and went outside.

As soon as he got outside his front door, King yelled at the individual who was crouched down by King’s vehicle. As soon as King yelled, the suspect stood and, without hesitation, fired a shot at Mr. King.

Luckily for King, as he yelled, he also stumbled. If it weren’t for that, however, John King’s injuries might have been much, much worse. In fact, he might have been killed.

Upon scrambling back into his house, King got to his cell phone and called 911. However, due to the pain in his knees and shoulder from falling, King was unaware that he had been shot in the arm.

At first, King thought that his assailant was merely trying to break into his vehicle. Little did he know, however, that the perpetrator was targeting him–because of his non-union company.

The night of the shooting, police recovered a shell casing from a small caliber handgun. In addition to the shell casing, police also found a Swiss Army knife that police say was likely going to be used to slice the tires on King’s SUV.

The perpetrator wasn’t interested in stealing anything — just vandalizing the vehicle, writing the word “scab” on its side, and shooting King.

And what about that reference to “attacks”? Well, it turns out union thugs have been harassing King and his business for decades. He recently won a federal suit against the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), which illegally promised jobs on union sites if his employees voted to unionize.

Back in the 1980s, IBEW thugs picketed outside his business — and both vandalized a vehicle and attacked one of his employees. King has been forced to report multiple instances of vandalism against his business this year alone. In one instance, rocks were thrown through his store’s window. One rock read “kill”.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s office is now investigating the shooting and encourages anyone with information to call 734-240-7530. King is offering a $10,000 reward for accurate information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator.

UPDATE: In case anyone’s unfamiliar with the term “scab”, it’s a derogatory term used by union thugs to refer to strikebreakers.

MORE: Don’t believe they’re thugs? Here’s a message from CWA 1109 senior executive Chris Calabrese:

It is open season. Follow them safely, but when you get to a location, torture them. Torture them with chants and noise. Be so loud that they can’t concentrate and wish they never got out of bed.

You know what we call individuals who torture people in order to achieve financial gain? Criminals. Thugs and criminals.
