Report: Christie Conducting Focus Groups for Presidential Run

by Stephan Tawney on August 17, 2011

Jonathan Alter of Bloomberg claims sources saying New Jersey Governor Chris Christie (R) is conducting focus groups for a potential presidential run.

I get why conservatives love Christie over his fiscal record, but they’re going to start having problems with him when they get to issues like gun rights.

Christie has long taken an anti-gun stance, running anti-Second Amendment ads in his 1995 state assembly run. He has also supported renewing the rights-infringing assault weapons ban, which expired in 2004 thanks to bipartisan opposition to renewal attempts.

In short, he’s good as a governor and has a place in the next Republican administration. But as president? No thank you. I need someone in the White House who respects the Second Amendment and will fight against the anti-gun lobby. Christie is many good things. But he’s not the guy who’ll fight for the Second Amendment.

Update: Christie aide Maria Comella says the report isn’t accurate. Could be an obligatory denial, could be the truth. We’ll see.
