I’ve already published a post on how to prepare for Hurricane Irene. Please read that if you haven’t already. Below are updates (in US eastern time zone) on the storm. In ascending order.

12:24pm: When a hurricane is threatening land, NHC issues updates about every three hours starting at two in the morning. So 2am, 5am, 8am, 11am, 2pm, 5pm, 8pm, and 11pm. The next update will come at 2pm eastern.

12:24pm: New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has declared a state of emergency, joining Governor Bev Perdue of North Carolina and Governor Bob McDonnell of Virginia.

In related news, President Obama has no plans to cut his Martha’s Vineyard vacation short. He’s still golfing. So there’s that.
