Biden Voted Against Condemning China’s Forced Abortion Policy

by Stephan Tawney on August 26, 2011

Vice President Joe Biden (D) has been criticized for his recent remarks in China, during which he said he understood China’s One Child Policy and wouldn’t second-guess it.

He said that despite the fact human rights groups and media reports indicate the policy forces abortions as late as 9 months and compels sterilization of hundreds of thousands of people.

A spokesman for Biden has since claimed his remarks were taken incorrectly and that he actually finds the policy abhorrent. Apparently he also thinks it needs to end.

And she said that despite the fact it completely and totally contradicts what he actually said.

How exactly does his supposed anti-One Child Policy stance jive with this:

Yet, Biden was one of 24 Democrats and 53 senators voting to defeat an amendment that year by then-Sen. Jessie Helms, a North Carolina Republican, for a non-binding resolution from the Senate condemning the one-child policy. He claims that doing so would jeopardize trade relations with the large Asian nation.

Condemning forced abortions and involuntary sterilizations? That could jeopardize our ability to import cheap toys!

And yet he’s willing to demonize Republicans for opposing abortion. He has no hesitation in condemning his fellow countrymen. But the Communists in Beijing? We can’t say anything bad about them.

So apparently he’s all about being pro-choice — unless condoning forced abortion is good for trade. Then…choice? Eh.

Republicans opposing choice because they’re trying to protect life? Evil fascists! Chinese Communists opposing choice because they want to force abortions? That’s totally understandable.

I ask again: Is Biden pro-choice or pro-abortion? He says he’s the former, but when a mother in China wants to keep her child and the government forces an abortion? He can’t manage to raise an objection.
