Post-Hurricane Irene Updates

by Stephan Tawney on August 28, 2011

The storm is still making its way towards Boston and the rest of New England, but it’s been downgraded to a Tropical Storm. Still dangerous and it’ll still drop plenty of water, but the hurricane stage is over.

So far there are more than 11 confirmed dead. Millions have lost power — including 330,000 customers in New Jersey alone. There’s some serious flooding along the seaboard — house-destroying flooding.

All things to keep in mind before anyone jokes about the storm. It was a killer that has caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage and ruined neighborhoods. Nothing to joke about.

11:17am: FDR Drive in NYC has been closed due to flooding. Governor Chris Christie will hold a press conference to update everyone on the situation at noon. You can watch it here.

11:24am: The Weather Channel reports a record flood at Mahwah, NJ, on the Ramapo River. Flood alerts. And more flooding.

11:33am: The I-87 Thruway from New York to Albany is closed due to flooding in the Hudson River Valley region. Some road blockage in Brooklyn. Flooding on the New Jersey Turnpike. Flooding in Hoboken.
