The American intelligence community has received credible information pertaining to a potential Al Qaeda terrorist attack on the anniversary of 9/11, ABC News reports.
At least three individuals — one believed to be a U.S. citizen — entered the U.S. in August by air with the intent to launch a vehicle-borne attack against Washington D.C. or New York around the anniversary of 9-11, according to intelligence officials. As news of the information became public authorities began weighing whether to raise the national threat level.
The suspected terrorists are believed to have embarked on their journey to the U.S. from Afghanistan, according to one senior official taking a route that took them through at least one other country, possibly Iran.
One official added that at least two rental trucks — one from Penske and one from Budget — were being sought nationwide. The Budget GMC truck and the Penske GMC both were missing from locations in Kansas City, Missouri. It was not immediately known if that search was connected to the plot.
A declassified bulletin will be issue shortly. Keep an eye out for that. Law enforcement will be advised to search for and locate the vehicles and plotters.
When Osama Bin Laden was killed back in May, intelligence officials found in his home plans — or at least information about potential plans — to strike on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Retaliation over his killing could also be a motivating factor for the terrorists.
