NBC News Twitter Feed Hacked

by Stephan Tawney on September 9, 2011

A group of unfunny hackers took over the NBC News Twitter account a short time ago. The group, calling itself “The Script Kiddies”, posted a series of Tweets indicating that Ground Zero had been stricken by a commercial airliner.

The first:

Breaking News! Ground Zero has just been attacked. Flight 5736 has crashed into the site, suspected hijacking. more as the story develops.

Second:

Flight 4782 is not responding, suspected hijacking. One plane just hit Ground Zero site at 5:47. #groundzeroattacked

Third:

This is not a joke, Ground Zero has just been attacked. We’re attempting to get reporters on the scene. #groundzeroattacked

And finally a confession:

NBCNEWS hacked by The Script Kiddies. Follow them at @s_kiddies!

I understand why even fellow hackers hate these assholes. They’re not even clever. They’re juvenile and unoriginal. It’s like a child getting into mommy’s makeup and writing “poopy head” on the wall. More pathetic than annoying.

They have a Twitter account of their own, which I would imagine Twitter will now suspend and destroy. I’m pretty sure hacking other accounts is a violation of the social network’s terms of use.

Update: Twitter has now suspended the hacker account. Not that it much matters. These assholes will just sign up from a different IP and establish a new account. It’s like a game of whack-a-mole.
