Perry Leads Romney by 12 Points, Bachmann Falls Behind Cain and Gingrich

by Stephan Tawney on September 12, 2011

According to a CNN/ORC International Poll, Rick Perry continues to lead Mitt Romney by double-digits in the race for the Republican nomination. Perry takes 30% support to Romney’s 18% backing.

Romney’s entitlements demagoguery doesn’t appear to have taken much of a toll on Perry. A late August survey found Perry/Romney at 30% and 17% respectively. Perry has held his ground while Romney has only gained one point in several weeks.

As for the other candidates, Michele Bachmann has perhaps seen the most stunning fall. She now trails both Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich, taking just 4% support. That’s down from 10% support and fourth-place from the last poll. Expect her to start demagoguing Perry on entitlement programs, too.

And so, the field sits thusly:

  • Perry – 30%
  • Romney – 18%
  • Palin – 15%
  • Paul – 12%
  • Cain – 5%
  • Gingrich – 5%
  • Bachmann – 4%
  • Huntsman – 2%
  • Santorum 2%

A couple of notes.

1) I know that Palin hasn’t declared. But that matters little as far as measuring field movement over the past few weeks. The last poll offered her name as a choice, too. What matters here is margin — not exact percentage.

2) Huntsman continues to find little support outside of the Obama-loving, conservative-despising mainstream media. Santorum fairs no better, but Santorum wasn’t played-up as a game changer.

3) Paul wants to reform Social Security, too. So support for entitlement reforming candidates actually tops 45%. Toss-in Herman Cain (who is clearly racist) and you have 50%. It’s unclear where Palin stands on reform, but she may well support it, too. Which takes you to 65%. Amazing.
