Race to Replace the Weiner: Election Night

by Stephan Tawney on September 13, 2011

There are actually two special elections tonight: One in Nevada (2nd district) and one in New York (9th district). But the one in Nevada is almost certain to find Republicans victorious, so we’re going to focus on New York’s 9th.

Remember: The ninth district is a blue district of New York City that voted for Barack Obama in 2008. And yet Obama’s approval rating is underwater in the district and two recent polls show the Republican in the lead.

Polls close in New York at 9pm eastern, so stay tuned. Results will be posted here. If you’re interested, the Nevada second district results will be posted here. Let’s hope we pull off a double victory tonight.

Update 11:02pm: Results are slow coming. So far, Turner (our guy) is doing well. Nate Silver says the data is “bad news for Dems”. Which means good news for us.

Update 11:08pm: Dave Wasserman, House elections expert for Cook Political Report, calls the NY-9 race for Republican Bob Turner.

Update 11:58pm: The Associated Press has called the election for Republican Bob Turner. Republicans will sweep this evening’s special elections in Nevada and New York.
