Some have wondered if Barack Obama would chicken-out at the last minute and vote to allow the creation of a Palestinian state.
Here’s your answer: Not a shot in hell.
The poll, commissioned by the non-partisan American Jewish Committee, found a plurality — 48% — disapproving of Obama’s job performance. A minority — 45% — approve, while 7% remain unsure.
And it’s not just his handling of foreign policy that has American Jews angry. He gets bad numbers on a range of issues.
- 60% disapprove of his handling of the economy. Just 37% approve.
- A bare majority of 50% approve of his energy policy. 43% disapprove.
- A plurality of 49% disapprove of his handling of immigration. 43% approve.
- 48% disapprove of his foreign policy performance. 47% approve.
A full 53% disapprove of the president’s handling of U.S.-Israeli relations. Just 40% think he’s doing well, while 7% aren’t sure.
If the election were held today, 50% of Jews would vote for Obama over Mitt Romney, who would take 32%. Some 16% wouldn’t vote for either.
Facing Rick Perry, Obama still only takes 55% of the Jewish vote. 25% would vote for Perry, while 18% would vote third party or stay home.
Here’s the kicker: Just 16% of Jews consider themselves Republicans. 45% are Democrats and 38% are Independents. 2%, um, aren’t sure. Whatever the hell that means.
Getting back to Middle Eastern issues, just 38% of American Jews favor the establishment of a Palestinian state. 55% are opposed. Those numbers get worse when you talk about the current statehood bid.
When asked if they would support the current Palestinian bid to seek statehood without the consent of Israel, a whopping 88% of Jewish voters oppose the idea. Just 9% want the plan accepted. As I said, not a shot in hell Obama lets the Palestinians get a state.
96% say Palestinians must recognize Israel as a Jewish state. 73% want aid withdrawn if the Palestinian Authority and Hamas form a coalition government. 59% say Jerusalem must remain a united city. 76% agree the intentions of the Arabs are not simply an independent state but the destruction of Israel. On Iran, a plurality (45%) disapprove of Obama’s handling of Iran. 56% would support military action to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
