Democratic Governor of North Carolina: Hey, Let’s Suspend Elections

by Stephan Tawney on September 27, 2011

North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue (D) is apparently doing what she can to make the hyperbolic warnings in my aunt’s chain emails come true.

If it’s any comfort, she’s only talking about Congressional elections. For now. So we’d have a Congress frozen with a Republican House and Democratic Senate. How that’s supposed to make economic recovery easier I don’t know.

CARY, N.C., Sept. 27 (UPI) — North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue Tuesday suggested suspending congressional elections to give lawmakers time to focus on the economic recovery.

Perdue, a Democrat, made the suggestion in an appearance before the Cary Rotary Club, The (Raleigh) News & Observer reported.

“I think we ought to suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress for two years and just tell them we won’t hold it against them, whatever decisions they make, to just let them help this country recover. I really hope that someone can agree with me on that,” Perdue said. “You want people who don’t worry about the next election.

Because you know what should really instill confidence in the economic sector? The suspension of the Constitution. Because, see, the Constitution mandates House elections every two years. So suspending elections would necessarily mean suspending the Constitution.

And yes, I do want members of Congress worrying about the next election. That’s what keeps them in line. It’s part of the whole “democracy” thing. You elect people to office and if they’re bad at it you dump them. It’s worked fine for quite some time now. Which, again, is why it’s part of the Constitution.

Some have suggested she was joking. Really? I missed the punchline. And I don’t think “I really hope that someone can agree with me on that” is it. But even if she later claims to have been joking, what the hell kind of joke is that for a governor? Hey, let’s suspend the Constitution and stop holding elections? Not “funny”.
