Report: Huckabee Now Reconsidering Run for President

by Stephan Tawney on September 30, 2011

Sounds like wishful thinking by some supporters. But it’s being reported by Reuters and Politico, so hell — why not.

(Reuters) – Mike Huckabee has been approached by Republican and conservative activists unhappy with the current crop of presidential hopefuls and he is considering entering the fray, two sources who have spoken with Huckabee told Reuters.

The former Arkansas governor, who made a splash by winning the Iowa caucuses as a candidate in 2008, announced last May on his Fox News show that he would not enter the race.

But the conservative Huckabee, who appeals to evangelical Christians and is seen as an effective campaigner, is taking another look at jumping in, said the two sources, who are close to Huckabee. They spoke to Reuters on the condition of anonymity.

“He is entertaining the request for conversations about it,” one of the sources said. “I do not think it is a complete 100 percent ‘I’m reconsidering’ but he hasn’t shut the door on it.”

And Politico:

“There’s this opening now,” one activist who spoke to POLITICO just said, confirming the story. The activist said it was a not a huge chance but that “he owes it to his country to look at it. It’s a tall mountain to climb, but it’s not a slog anymore. It’s not some long drawn-out process. It’s 100 days.”

A couple of points.

1) I don’t think it’s going to happen, if for no other reason than he knows he can’t win and doesn’t want to forfeit his profitable Fox News gig. I think that’s part of what has kept Sarah Palin out of the race, too. Gotta think of the family and where the food is coming from.

2) What’s his appeal? Social conservatism? All of the frontrunners are social conservatives, too. But they have the benefit of being both socially conservative and having business/economic records. Huckabee isn’t particularly known for anything related to the economy, which is paramount in 2012.

3) Huckabee has the same in-state tuition problem as Perry. He even called opponents of such taxpayer benefits for illegal aliens “un-Christian“. He questioned how Christians could “turn their backs” on illegal aliens. That’s not going to appeal to those skittish about Perry’s immigration record.

4) Or is this not about winning but instead knocking out Perry and Cain and scoring a coup for the big government wing of the Republican Party? Huckabee takes out Perry, blocks out Cain, and Romney slides to the nomination. Then guess who gets picked for the role of VP candidate intended to appeal to southern voters? Boom.

Romney/Huckabee 2012? Shoot me now.
