Obama Loans $529 million to Create Jobs in Finland

Attention all taxpayers: The people of Finland would like to thank you for loaning an automaker $529 million to create jobs in their country. Really, you shouldn’t have. Too kind. Too kind.

With the approval of the Obama administration, an electric car company that received a $529 million federal government loan guarantee is assembling its first line of cars in Finland, saying it could not find a facility in the United States capable of doing the work.

Vice President Joseph Biden heralded the Energy Department’s $529 million loan to the start-up electric car company called Fisker as a bright new path to thousands of American manufacturing jobs. But two years after the loan was announced, the job of assembling the flashy electric Fisker Karma sports car has been outsourced to Finland.

“There was no contract manufacturer in the U.S. that could actually produce our vehicle,” the car company’s founder and namesake told ABC News. “They don’t exist here.”

The company insists the money has gone to engineering work in the United States. But the fact remains the loan freed-up money to be spent on the creation of 500 jobs in Finland — jobs that were supposed to be created here.

First rule of unwise federal loan programs: Get promises in writing.

So hey, why did Fisker get a big taxpayer loan in the first place? It could have something to do with the fact former Vice President Al Gore is an investor in the company. That’s right, ABC News reports the company is backed by a venture firm with partners including the King of Global Warming Alarmism.

But hey, at least the money’s being put to good use, right? Right? Oh:

Fisker is more than a year behind rolling out its $97,000 luxury vehicle bankrolled in part with DOE money. While more are promised soon, just 40 of its Karma cars (below) have been manufactured and only two delivered to customers’ driveways, including one to movie star Leonardo DiCaprio.

So thanks to taxpayers, two wealthy individuals have been able to take delivery of their $97,000 luxury vehicles. The other 38 manufactured units have yet to be sold. What a great use of taxpayer money, huh?
