Prominent House Democrat: Let’s give Obama dictatorial powers

by Stephan Tawney on October 22, 2011

Sure, why not. Oh, right, because we live in the United States and not the Soviet Union. That’s why.

Virginia Democratic Rep. Jim Moran told The Daily Caller on Thursday evening that President Obama should “refinance every home mortgage” without congressional approval in order to “reset the economy.”

Even this White House would be unwilling to suggest that the president can unilaterally refinance every home mortgage. Moran is talking about giving the president the power to seize control of assets, change contracts, and force private companies to change their policies — all by executive action.

Moran is no backbencher, either. He serves on the House Committee on Appropriations and was co-founder of the supposedly moderate New Democrat Coalition. He’s been a close ally of Nancy Pelosi for many years and, until Democrats lost control of the House, previously chaired powerful committees with big budgetary power.

So this is a mainstream House Democrat openly advocating granting Barack Obama dictatorial powers to seize control of assets, change contracts, and intervene in the operation of private companies. All supposedly in the name of the greater economic good. Scratch a Democrat, find someone who yearns for absolute power.
