Cain’s Accuser: Oh, I can talk now? Er, no thanks

by Stephan Tawney on November 4, 2011

The National Restaurant Association, where Herman Cain worked while accused of sexual harassment, released the woman from her confidentiality agreement, permitting her to talk and go on record with her allegations. So we should be getting details any…

Wait, what’s that you say? Even though she no longer has an excuse to stay quiet about the exact nature of her complaint she’s still not willing to go on record with specific allegations? You don’t say. You know, it’s almost as if she settled for just $35,000 — diddly squat in the world of settlements — and a confidentiality agreement because she lacked a case from the get-go and just wanted the money.

Crazy talk, I know.

Bennett said his client sees “no value” in revisiting the issue now, but “stands by the complaint that she made.”

Bennett said his client would disagree with Cain’s characterization of the alleged harassment incidents.

He confirmed that the alleged harassment occurred in 1999 over a period of “at least a month or two.” There was “more than one incident,” he said.

So now she’s throwing around more allegations but, again, refuses to go on record with them or give details about their nature — even though she has every legal right to do so now. Funny that.

As Allahpundit notes:

(I)t’s 4:45 p.m. ET on Friday as I write this and, after a full week of accusations, we still have yet to hear a single credible detailed account of what happened between him and the accusers.

Indeed. How odd that so many people who were supposedly harassed by Cain are unwilling to provide details, unwilling to go on record, and unwilling to do anything but make allegations for which no evidence has been provided.

It’s almost as if there is no evidence. As if he was an ordinary executive against whom opportunistic employees file complaints in attempts to get-rich-quick. As if these people are only coming out again now because there’s attention to be had now that he’s a serious Republican contender.

Where were these people when Cain was polling in the single-digits? Where were these people from the 1990s until now, during which time he hosted a radio program and sought lower political offices? Where were these people when Cain first announced his intentions to seek the presidency?

Only now that he has a decent shot at unseating Obama and the media’s attention is on his candidacy have they reemerged. Only now when there’s money to be made and attention to be had are they willing to talk again (anonymously for now) about their allegations. How convenient.
