Obama Announces New Tax on Christmas Trees

by Stephan Tawney on November 8, 2011

Exactly as it sounds.

President Obama’s Agriculture Department today announced that it will impose a new 15-cent charge on all fresh Christmas trees—the Christmas Tree Tax—to support a new Federal program to improve the image and marketing of Christmas trees.

Um…Christmas trees have an image problem?

In the Federal Register of November 8, 2011, Acting Administrator of Agricultural Marketing David R. Shipman announced that the Secretary of Agriculture will appoint a Christmas Tree Promotion Board. The purpose of the Board is to run a “program of promotion, research, evaluation, and information designed to strengthen the Christmas tree industry’s position in the marketplace; maintain and expend existing markets for Christmas trees; and to carry out programs, plans, and projects designed to provide maximum benefits to the Christmas tree industry” (7 CFR 1214.46(n)). And the program of “information” is to include efforts to “enhance the image of Christmas trees and the Christmas tree industry in the United States” (7 CFR 1214.10).

And nothing says enhancing an industry like making the products it sells more expensive and politically charged.

To pay for the new Federal Christmas tree image improvement and marketing program, the Department of Agriculture imposed a 15-cent fee on all sales of fresh Christmas trees by sellers of more than 500 trees per year (7 CFR 1214.52). And, of course, the Christmas tree sellers are free to pass along the 15-cent Federal fee to consumers who buy their Christmas trees.

The administration’s defense? The new tax “is not a tax nor does it yield revenue for the Federal government”. Got that? It’s neither a tax nor fee yet brings in revenue for the federal government. And if you can explain that logic to me, be my guest.

Well this should not surprise anyone.

While I assume this idea comes from the Secretary of Agriculture, and not Obama, although I wouldn’t be surprised, I think it reveals some kind of psychological disorder…

Obama is a moron. Or incredibly intelligent. And he thinks you’re a moron too. That’s why he thinks he can get away with all this crap. And sadly, according to polls, 30+% of the population is proving him to be correct. We now know, for certain, that at least 30% of the American population is moronic. How sad.

What the F*** is wrong here??? What next, tax on every baby diaper used. How about a step tax to promote the walking image. One penny for each step you take. Why is government so up in our faces with taxes for everything we do or use. Why aren’t the sales of other religious holiday symbols taxed in this way? What defines a Christmas tree, the name? So let’s just call it a “Holiday Tree” so it will be exempt… God I hate this government and Obama…
