House Democrat: I Hope the Supercommittee Fails

by Stephan Tawney on November 9, 2011

We’re still hearing about how an unelected talk show host hoped Barack Obama would fail. So an elected and prominent House Democrat hoping the all-important deficit commission fails? Fair game.

“I hope that they cannot reach an agreement,” Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) said, according to Capital New York.

Some Democrats have suggested that they might have the upper hand in the negotiations because of the rare opportunity for deep reductions in defense spending — something some Democrats have wished for before.

By all means, our biggest fiscal issue by far is entitlement spending, with more than $100 trillion in unfunded liabilities. But let’s try to “fix” (read: ignore) our real problem by gutting national defense — one of the only explicit responsibilities of the federal government. Priorities.
