Breaking: Shots Fired at White House

by Stephan Tawney on November 11, 2011

I’m seeing it from multiple sources including a reporter for NBC4 in Washington, Think Progress, and some others.

Here’s what’s being reported right now: Someone with an AK-47 assault rifle fired several shots at the White House before fleeing. The vehicle has Idaho plates but may be stolen. Parts of Constitution Avenue have been shut down, and no suspect is yet in custody.

This is odd. Anyone with access to television or Google would know the president isn’t there tonight. He’s on an aircraft carrier in California for a basketball game. So the responsible party clearly didn’t do much research. Stand by for updates.

Update: The AK-47 has been recovered, NBC reports. It was found in a Honda abandoned by the suspect. A second vehicle is now believed to be involved. A reporter for NBC says the rifle appears to be equipped with a scope.

Update X2: Park Police say the shooting took place between two vehicles. Meanwhile, Ari Fleischer writes on Twitter:

If “WH shooting” took place on Constitution Ave betw15-17th St, that’s about 7 football fields from WH. Sensationalism??

I can’t vouch for his positioning, but I thought I’d pass it along.

UPDATE: Fleischer was right, NBC was sensationalizing. The Department of Homeland Security says the shots weren’t fired at the White House, that it was instead a local crime issue — which explains the shots exchanged between two vehicles. The incident occurred about a quarter-mile from the White House fence. It had nothing to do with the White House.
