Cain Campaign Now Deceiving Supporters for Money?

by Stephan Tawney on November 27, 2011

Via Katrina Trinko at National Review, here‘s a new fundraising email from the Cain campaign:

I am excited to share a recent Rasmussen (conducted November 21-22) which shows me retaking the lead nationally with 26 percent support. I am leading Governor Romney and Speaker Gingrich by 3 and 12 percent respectively. …

Please donate $25, $50, $100, $500, $1000 or more today to my campaign for President.

While I lead my fellow GOP candidates in the national polls, I trail them in one important category: Money.

Wait, you’re saying. He retook the national lead? Why didn’t I hear about this before now?

Because he didn’t. His campaign is touting a poll from November 2nd — not November 21st and 22nd. In an email to Trinko, the campaign admits as much — but they say they won’t send out an email or Tweet correcting the claims.

So they’re lying for money now.

First of all, that phrasing “retaking” is intentional. They’re acknowledging that the polls showed them losing the lead, and now they’re touting a poll they claim to show them “retaking” the lead.

Wouldn’t you double-check the date on polling data before claiming a miraculous comeback and then emailing that claim to all of your supporters? I double-check poll dates before publishing a blog post but they don’t do the same for mass-blast fundraising emails?

Second, they refuse to correct the record. So they’re admitting they’re just fine with their supporters falsely believing Cain has retaken the lead in the Republican field. They’re fine misleading their supporters for money.
