Randy Babbitt, who has been chief of the Federal Aviation Administration since June 2009, was arrested over the weekend for driving while intoxicated.

The 65-year-old bureaucrat was pulled over by an officer after he was spotted driving the wrong way down Old Lee Highway in Fairfax City.

Babbitt, who was released on his own recognizance after an initial hearing before a magistrate, had his court date set for February 2, 2012.

The Department of Transportation says a statement will be released regarding the arrest later today.

Babbitt, who also served in the Clinton Administration, was one of the founders of the Air Line Pilots Association, a union affiliated with the AFL-CIO. He was nominated by Obama in early 2009 and later confirmed by the Democratic-controlled Senate.

Update: Babbitt has been placed on a leave of absence.
