Zambia on Amnesty International’s Demand to Arrest Bush: Pound Sand

by Stephan Tawney on December 5, 2011

Who knew African countries would be hesitant to arrest on false charges a guy whose policies saved millions of lives across Africa?

(RNN) β€” Zambia will not arrest former US president George W. Bush during his African tour for violating international torture laws, the foreign minister said Saturday.

Rights group Amnesty International had Thursday urged Ethiopia, Tanzania and Zambia to arrest Bush during the five-day tour to promote efforts to fight diseases like cancer, AIDS and malaria.

β€œOn what basis does Amnesty International want us to arrest Mr Bush? Tell them to hang, and also please ask them to create their own country and wait for Mr Bush to visit their country so that they can arrest him to suit their wish and not here in Zambia,” Foreign Minister Chishimba Kambwili told AFP.

Bush is in Zambia on the second stop of the tour, having arrived in Tanzania on Thursday.

The former president has been credited even by liberal critics as having done more to fight disease and AIDS on the African continent than any other president before him. Bono has said Bush “knocked it out of the park” and even The Daily Show highlighted his efforts.

Bush always enjoyed higher approval in many African countries than in his own. He’s warmly greeted in his travels there. People remember what he did for the continent during his presidency. So yeah, they might think twice about arresting him for some made-up crap.
