Poll: Gingrich Leads in Iowa, Florida, South Carolina

by Stephan Tawney on December 7, 2011

Very bad news for Mittens. You don’t lose Iowa, South Carolina, and Florida, win New Hampshire, and then get the nomination. He’ll need these polls to change dramatically.

Iowa: Gingrich 33%, Romney 20%, Paul 17%, Perry 9%, Bachmann 7%, Santorum 5%, Huntsman 1%.

New Hampshire: Romney 35%, Gingrich 26%, Paul 17%, Huntsman 8%, Bachmann 3% Perry 2%, Santorum 2%

South Carolina: Gingrich 43%, Romney 20%, Perry 8%, Bachmann 6%, Paul 6%, Santorum 4%, Huntsman 1%.

Florida: Gingrich 48%, Romney 25%, Paul 5%, Bachmann 3%, Huntsman 3%, Perry 3%, Santorum 1%

The big question is whether Gingrich can sustain his surge or if he drops away like Bachmann, Perry, and Cain did. Gingrich has something on his side the others didn’t: Time.

It’s entirely possible voters start to see the race as coming down to two options: Romney and Gingrich. Those who don’t like Romney may see Gingrich as the other plausible option this late in the race.

It may be that the Gingrich surge is real and lasting.
