Canada Withdraws from Kyoto Protocol, Says It Failed

by Stephan Tawney on December 12, 2011

For years environmentalists have slammed the United States for failing to sign-on to the Kyoto Protocol. The agreement hampered developed countries like the United States while allowing developing countries like India and China to continue chugging-along.

The Clinton Administration wanted the United States to be part of the Kyoto Protocol. In fact, the administration signed the protocol in 1998. But the United States Senate cut the plan off at the knees. In a 95-0 vote, sponsored by one Democrat and one Republican, the Senate rejected the proposal.

So anyway, for years we’ve heard about how evil the United States has been for not signing-on to the Kyoto Protocol. In fact, we were the only nation to refuse participation.

How are things going with the protocol, by the way? Ah, I see:

Ouch. Why is Canada withdrawing? Because they say the protocol has failed. They’re now looking for a new international consensus. I’m sure we’ll jump right on that, judging by the track record of past such agreements.
