Breaking: Congress to Block Incandescent Light Bulb Ban

by Stephan Tawney on December 16, 2011

Compromise legislation to continue funding the government after the year’s end will contain a provision blocking the Department of Energy from enforcing a ban on incandescent light bulbs, Politico reports.

GOP and Democratic sources tell POLITICO the final omnibus bill includes a rider defunding the Energy Department’s standards for traditional incandescent light bulbs to be 30 percent more energy efficient.

The regulation would have banned incandescent light bulbs, forcing American consumers to choose between CFLs — which contain toxic mercury vapors — or very expensive LED bulbs.
