Obama Budget Kills DC Voucher Program

by Stephan Tawney on February 13, 2012

The DC voucher program being the only way many talented low-income children in the nation’s capital, most of them minorities by the way, get to attend higher-quality schools than the public system’s offering.

He’s on a crusade to kill the program. Why? Because it takes kids out of the public school system. And who controls the public school system in DC? The union establishment, to which he is indebted politically.

The guy is literally placing wealthy and powerful union bosses above talented, low-income, mostly-minority school children hoping to make something of themselves in life. It’s absolutely disgusting.

And this doesn’t even save us much money. A whole $20 million out of a $3.8 trillion budget proposal. Not $20 billion. Not $200 million. But $20 million. It’s about $8,000 per child — $10,000 less than we spend on kids in the public school system in the district.

But again, this isn’t about money for Obama. It’s about bowing to left-wing interests that want the kids to remain in a crappy public education system, where they can be molded by lefty teachers and so there’s no competition for tax dollars with private education. The union teachers want to keep sucking at their jobs and make sure there’s nothing you can do about it.

To quote Allahpundit:

The bad news is that O is so deeply captive to public-school teachers’ unions that he’d rather risk the optics of canceling a school-choice program for poor kids knowing that it’ll end up in the budget anyway than embrace it and anger his PEU cronies. Loathsome.

The one bit of good news? Republicans support school choice. The same Republicans who control the House and, after November, will almost certainly control the Senate, too. They have the muscle to stand up for the kids.

By the way, where’s the money for this program going? The administration has announced taxpayers will now increase subsidies for the $40,000 Chevy Volt to $10,000 per buyer. Almost all of the money cut from the school choice program will go to subsidize expensive vehicles for environmentalists.
