Obama to Woodward: We Can Deal With Another Terror Attack

The Washington Post reports that Barack Obama told investigative journalist Bob Woodward this past July that the United States can deal with another terrorist attack on the scale of the September 11th attacks.

The president also said that, while we’ll act to prevent a similar attack, we’ll do just fine as a nation if we lose another 3,000 countrymen to Islamic terrorism. In fact, Obama told Woodward, the United States is stronger because of the attack.

We can absorb a terrorist attack. We’ll do everything we can to prevent it, but even a 9/11, even the biggest attack ever… we absorbed it and we are stronger.

At first it sounds like quote about the resiliency of the United States. But Ace sees another meaning, and I’d have to agree based on the history of this administration:

The idea, of course, is that America overreacted to 9/11, and 50,000 people die every year in car crashes, and we don’t freak out about that, do we? No, we accept these as acceptable losses in the bigger picture (that is, we want to drive places) and we take the exchange. We drive, some of us will die. Sound bargain.

That’s the killer notion here — the idea of bargain. Of what is being exchanged for these deaths. In the case of automobile collisions, well, sure, we have mobility and freedom. That’s something.

But the left is pushing this idea that we can safely “absorb” many new 9/11′s with an eye towards getting us to “accept” the greater bargain they fatuously offer — peace, and a general wind-down of post-9/11 security “overreactions” like the FBI tracking Muslims suspected of terrorist ties. If only we didn’t overreact to the occasional mass-murder, we could go about our business without war, without increased security measures, without “Islamophobia,” without the rest of it.

The problem, you see, is primarily within us, those being targeted for murder. If only we understood that this was a good bargain in exchange for living in a multicultural country and global economy, then we could be good citizens of the world and not lash out so terribly and uselessly when some of the more aggressive proponents of multiculturalism blow up a few of our buildings.

Which fits in with Obama’s global apology apology tour and his inability to stop putting down his own country. In fact, we covered that same theme just three posts ago, when Obama decided to distort history to put down the United States in favor of Mexico and the open-borders lobby.

Basically, we can afford to be less aggressive and not worry about pursuing victory in the war on terror because, hey, 9/11 wasn’t so bad. After all, we only lost three thousand people out of three hundred million, and you could even say we came out stronger in the end. Sure we’ll try to prevent attacks, but if we fail? We can take it. We’ll do just fine.

Stephan: I’m not sure I agree with the way Ace and Dalton view the quote. But can you imagine if Bush had said we could deal with another 9/11 attack? The outrage-y outrage would be nuclear.

ObamaCare Cancels Discount Drug Deals for Childrens Hospitals

The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Except I don’t believe for a second that Democratic intentions were good when they passed ObamaCare. I’m sure we’ll find there’s a government-based solution Democrats just happen to have on hand to “fix” this problem.

In an unintended consequence of the new health care law, drug companies have begun notifying children’s hospitalsaround the country that they no longer qualify for large discounts on drugs used to treat rare medical conditions.

As a result, prices are going up for these specialized “orphan drugs,” some of which are also used to treat more common conditions.

Over the last 18 years, Congress has required drug manufacturers to provide discounts to a variety of health care providers, including community health centers, AIDS clinics and hospitals that care for large numbers of low-income people.

Several years ago, Congress broadened the program to include children’s hospitals. But this year Congress, in revising the drug discount program as part of the new health care law, blocked these hospitals from continuing to receive price cuts on orphan drugs intended for treatment of diseases affecting fewer than 200,000 people in the United States.

Unintended. Right. Except that rural hospitals, clinics, and community centers are either gaining access to or are continuing to receive access to the discount medication. Democrats somehow remembered to include access for community centers and clinics while they forgot those pesky childrens hospitals.

The Democratic response to this clusterfark? Our bad.

A House Democrat who worked on the health care law said the situation had resulted from “an honest mistake in drafting,” and he added, “No one intended to take away any of the drug discounts that children’s hospitals already had.”

No one intended. And yet that’s exactly what happened. Hundreds of lawyers, thousands of pages of legislation, thousands of eyes, and no one noticed that childrens hospitals were going to be screwed up the arse in order to benefit community centers and clinics.

Obama Wants To Lift Ban On Commercial Whaling

Really? This is the one area in which Obama wants to scale down the scope of governmental control? An international ban on commercial whale hunting? Dude, I think he’s given up on a second term.

Environmentalists, already peeved with the administration’s handling of the Gulf oil spill, are accusing President Obama of breaking his campaign pledge to end the slaughter of whales.

The Obama administration is leading an effort within the International Whaling Commission to lift a 24-year international ban on commercial whaling for Japan, Norway and Iceland, the remaining three countries in the 88-member commission that still hunt whales.

The administration argues that the new deal will save thousands of whales over the next decade by stopping the three countries from illegally exploiting loopholes in the moratorium.

Is this going to save thousands of whales like ObamaCare is going to save us money? In other words, it won’t? Because so far, this is sounding like much the same argument.

Who was the far-left loon who first championed this international ban on whaling?

Several environmental groups have joined forces to pressure Obama to withdraw his support for the deal before the whaling commission votes June 20 in Morocco on whether to lift the ban that was championed by President Reagan.

Yes, Ronald Reagan — the most beloved president in modern conservatism — championed the cause of banning commercial whaling.

Since President Ronald Reagan first helped usher in the international ban on commercial whaling, every American President has reasserted our nation’s strong leadership in the fight to save the whales.

Even the Bush Administration — the seeming arch nemesis of the environmental left — maintained the commercial whaling ban. So, um, awkward.

WaPo: Obama Wanted To Cut Coast Guard Oil Response Team

Just three months ago, Barack Obama proposed downsizing the United States Coast Guard’s oil spill response team, the Washington Post reports. Talk about bad timing:

Three months before the massive BP oil spill erupted in the Gulf of Mexico, the Obama administration proposed downsizing the Coast Guard national coordination center for oil spill responses, prompting its senior officers to warn that the agency’s readiness for catastrophic events would be weakened…

Accidents happen, “but what you’re seeing here is the government is not properly set up to deal with this kind of issue,” said Robbin Laird, a defense consultant who has worked on Coast Guard issues. “The idea that you would even think about getting rid of catastrophic environmental spill equipment or expertise at the Department of Homeland Security, are you kidding me?”

“Cutting a strike team is nuts,” said Stephen Flynn, a former Coast Guard commander and now president of the Center for National Policy, a Washington think tank. “Whether it’s an accident of man or an act of terrorism, it requires almost the exact same skill set to clean it up.”

President Obama’s $10.1 billion spending plan for the Coast Guard would scale back funding and active-duty personnel by 3 percent. As part of a proposal to cut 1,100 military personnel, it would decommission the National Strike Force Coordination Center in Elizabeth City, N.C., and reorganize parts of it elsewhere.

The center serves as the national command for the Coast Guard activity responsible for sending technical experts and specialized equipment such as pumps and chemical dispersant monitors to support on-scene commanders.

I’m as conservative and small government as the next guy, but the government does have certain responsibilities. Like securing the border, protecting the people from actual enemies foreign and domestic, and responding to major disasters. It seems cutting funding for the Coast Guard undercuts all of those responsibilities.

Revealed: Democrats Plan Another $371 Billion In HC Costs

Democrats will introduce legislation that removes the Medicare cuts to doctors in exchange for another $371 billion in health care costs, bringing the total cost of the government-run health care legislation to well-over $1 trillion. That will wipe out any deficit reductions indicated in the CBO score.

Why the separate legislation for this “doc fix”? Because including the measure in the current legislation would lead to no deficit reduction and higher costs. We’ll end up with both negative impacts anyway, but making the plan into two separate pieces of legislation makes each more politically safe.

Democrats removed the so-called doc fix from the reform legislation last year because its $371-billion price tag would have made it impossible for Democrats to claim that their bill reduces the deficit. Republicans have argued for months that by stripping the doc fix from the bill, Democrats were playing a shell game.

“Most health staff are already aware that our health proposal does not contain a ‘doc fix.’ … The inclusion of a full SGR repeal would undermine reform’s budget neutrality. So again, do not allow yourself (or your boss) to get into a discussion of the details of CBO scores and textual narrative. Instead, focus only on the deficit reduction and number of Americans covered,” the memo, sent Thursday to Democratic staff, said.

“As most health staff knows, leadership and the White House are working with the AMA to rally physicians for a full SGR repeal later this spring. However, both health and communications staff should understand we do not want that policy discussion discussed at this time, lest (it) complicate the last critical push to pass health reform,” according to the memo.

The memo helps explains why the American Medical Association has supported reform even though their top legislative priority, the doc fix, was left out. The group is working behind the scenes with Democratic leadership and the White House to fix the cuts later this year.

In other words, the CBO score is only for one part of the overall government-run health care plan. The other aspect, the “doc fix”, will add another $371 billion to the already-scored $940 billion price tag. It would also eliminate the deficit reduction promised by Democrats.

More Pro-Obama Astro turfing Exposed

Previously we’ve discussed the “Ellie Light” articles, in which someone writing under the same name is writing almost identical articles in cities across the country. The only difference between the editorials, which staunchly defend Barack Obama, is the claimed location of their author. “Ellie Light” is located in whichever circulation area the newspaper covers.

But now more evidence of pro-Obama astroturfing has been exposed.

This article, published under the name “Jan Chen”, appeared in a small Asian community newspaper in Seattle:

As one listens to the Republican anger over health care reform, one can imagine an anti-government protester cheerfully paying premiums on insurance policies that drop you after you make a claim, or happily sauntering out of an emergency room that denied them treatment because of a coverage problem. One can imagine a town hall sign-waver enthusiastically forking over most of their pay to bill collectors after suffering a catastrophic injury, thinking, “Wow, the free market system is great.”

At the same time, a nearly-identical article is published under the name “Gloria Elle” in Baltimore paper:

As one listens to the Republican anger over health care reform, one can imagine an anti-government protester cheerfully paying premiums on insurance policies that cancel you for making a claim, or happily sauntering out of an emergency room that denied them treatment because of a coverage problem. One can imagine a town-hall sign-waver enthusiastically forking over most of their pay to bill collectors after suffering a catastrophic injury, thinking, “Wow, the free market system is great.”

The author is clearly the same, yet the article is published in two different cities under two different names. Much like the “Ellie Light” articles. (By the way, “Ellie” is Greek for “Light”.)

There are at least three other examples of same words, different author editorials over at Patterico. This is pretty clearly the result of astroturfing. The question is, who is funding this operation? Or at least organizing it? Keeping in mind that top Obama political adviser David Axelrod admits to specializing in the astroturfing trade.

Can we get the mainstream media to look into this? Or are they too busy fretting over Brangelina’s supposed visit to a divorce attorney?

White House Party Crasher Has Ties to Palestinian Authority

Tareq Salahi, one of the two White House state dinner crashers who’ve made international news over their charade, has ties to the Palestinian Authority. In fact, he serves as a board member for the American Task Force on Palestine, a lobbying group with established ties to the government of Mahmoud Abbas.

As TalkingPointsMemo reports, however, the scrubbing has begun. The group has already erased his profile from their website. You can find a screengrab of the profile here and Google cache of the same here. His profile read:

Tareq Salahi is the CEO and Owner of the Oasis Winery in Hume,Virginia. He is also founder and President of Oasis Limousines & Wine Country Tours, President of Oasis Yachts & Wine Tasting Cruises, and the founder and President of the Blue Ridge Wine Way. Oasis Winery was one of the first United States wineries to be added to the elite listing of the Top 10 Sparkling Wines & Champagnes in the World by the Wine Enthusiast Magazine.

Mr. Salahi travels the world as the Team Captain for the United States Polo Team and represents both the United States and Palestine on his diplomatic polo tours. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society named Mr. Salahi their 2002 National Man of the Year. He is a board member of the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Mid Atlantic, an Honorary Chairman of the Smithsonian Associates, and Founding Contributing Member of the Virginia Regional Therapeutic Center. He also devotes his time to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, St. Jude?s Children Research Hospital, the American Cancer Society, Meadow Outdoor Foundation/Virginia Gold Cup, British Forces Foundation, MADD & Charity Polo Matches throughout the United States and the United Kingdom.

Mr. Salahi graduated from University of California at Davis with a Bachelorof Science in Enology and Business Marketing Management.

How many of his claims are true isn’t clear. After all, he and his wife lied to get into an official state dinner honoring Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. They now potentially face criminal charges.

What is obviously accurate is that Mr. Salahi has ties to the Palestinian Authority. And that the group is now trying to hide that fact.

Surprise: Mother of Little Town Hall Girl is Major Obama Donor

You recall that little girl, the one who asked Barack Obama about those “mean signs” his opponents have been carrying around. Turns out her mother is not only a major donor to the president’s political ambitions, but she’s met personally with the Obama family and administration before.

But remember: This was a totally random, non-pre-screened town hall where average Americans got to question the president. Some of these random Americans just happened to be major donors and supporters, not to mention acquaintances, of the Obama family.

A girl from Malden asked President Obama a question at Tuesday’s town hall meeting in New Hampshire about the signs outside “saying mean things” about his health care proposal.

Eleven-year-old Julia Hall asked: “How do kids know what is true, and why do people want a new system that can — that help more of us?”

The question opened the door for the president to respond to what he called an “underlying fear” among the public “that people somehow won’t get the care they need.”

The girl later told the Globe that picking the president’s brain was “incredible.”

“It was like a once in a lifetime experience,” she said.

Julia’s mother was an early Obama supporter in Massachusetts during the presidential election, so she had previously met First Lady Michelle Obama, the Obama daughters Sasha and Malia, and Vice President Joe Biden.

“This was my first time meeting Barack Obama, and he’s a very nice man,” Julia said. “I’m glad I voted for him.”

She said Obama won a mock presidential election at the Cheverus School in 2008. And on Tuesday, he approached her after the town meeting.

“He said ‘great question,’” Julia said. “I shook his hand and got his picture.”

Kathleen Manning Hall, Julia’s mother, was shocked when her daughter said she wanted to ask a question. They wrote it down beforehand, and Julia didn’t miss a beat when Obama called on her.

“It was surreal,” said Manning Hall, a coordinator of Massachusetts Women for Obama during the election.

Quite surreal. Amazing how you can get the president to call on you when your mother helped get him to where he is today. It’s like a freaking miracle. The stars and planets simply aligned for that once-in-a-lifetime coincidence of miraculous proportions, when a little girl whose mother has donated thousands to the Obama campaign got called upon to spew Democratic talking points.

Expect the left to start screeching tomorrow about how we’re attacking that poor, cute little girl for daring to ask a question. The fact that her mother is a major supporter, and that she planted her daughter in the audience to back up the president’s domestic agenda, will be noticeably left out of the narrative.

Thanks to Michelle Malkin.

Obama Finally Issues Statement on Slain Soldier

Despite taking just hours to issue a statement of condemnation regarding the murder of late-term abortion doctor George Tiller, it’s taken President Barack Obama until now — three days after the murder — to issue a limp statement regarding the killing of an American soldier by someone who’s been charged with terrorism. Here it finally is:

“I am deeply saddened by this senseless act of violence against two brave young soldiers who were doing their part to strengthen our armed forces and keep our country safe. I would like to wish Quinton Ezeagwula a speedy recovery, and to offer my condolences and prayers to William Long’s family as they mourn the loss of their son.”

Actually, it wasn’t senseless. It was a killing of an American soldier by a politically-motivated convert to Islam who despised the military and America. He’s been charged with multiple counts of terrorism and one count of first-degree murder. And yet it’s taken our Commander-in-Chief three days and pressure from some media outlets to issue that statement. By comparison, here’s the statement Obama issued without prompt a few hours after the murder of Tiller:

I am shocked and outraged by the murder of Dr. George Tiller as he attended church services this morning. However profound our differences as Americans over difficult issues such as abortion, they cannot be resolved by heinous acts of violence.

Apparently some cold-blooded murder is less outrageous to President Obama than others. The murder of a late-term abortion doctor is outrageous enough to spark a strong comment within hours, while the murder of an individual who served this country in the military takes days and media pressure for any comment whatsoever. Lovely.

Obama Silent on Recruitment Center Shooting

When Dr. George Tiller, the infamous late-term abortion doctor, was murdered by a man opposed to abortion, the White House was quick to issue a condemnation from President Obama.

How long did it take our Commander-in-Chief to condemn the murder of a member of the Armed Forces by a man now charged not only with murder but terrorism? Actually, he still hasn’t condemned the latter.

Not a word about the jihadi attack on the two Army recruiters in Arkansas. No condemnation of the heinous attack and senseless violence. No condolences for the families of the targeted men or praise for the military recruiters who have been under increasing attack on U.S. soil. No statements from the DOJ or Pentagon, either.

Funny how Obama is absolutely outraged over the murder of an abortion doctor, yet can’t get worked up over the murder of an American soldier by a terrorist on American soil. It’s almost like he doesn’t consider the latter as tragic as the former.

The White House isn’t the only outlet treating the two murders differently, either. Newsbusters points out that there’s 7,000 references to George Tiller on Google News. Yet there’s just 500 references to William Long, the soldier murdered outside the recruiting center. Funny that.
