American Legion Responds to Obama DHS Report

One of the most egregious aspects of the Obama Department of Homeland Security’s report warning of “rightwing extremism” is the part about military veterans. In case you don’t remember, here’s what the report said:

(U) Disgruntled Military Veterans

(U//FOUO) DHS/I&A assesses that rightwing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans in order to exploit their skills and knowledge derived from military training and combat. These skills and knowledge have the potential to boost the capabilities of extremists—including lone wolves or small terrorist cells—to carry out violence. The willingness of a small percentage of military personnel to join extremist groups during the 1990s because they were disgruntled, disillusioned, or suffering from the psychological effects of war is being replicated today.

Well, the American Legion is pissed about this and rightly so. The organization has responded:

Secretary Janet Napolitano
Department of Homeland Security
U.S. Department of Homeland Security
Washington, DC 20528

April 13, 2009

Dear Secretary Napolitano,

On behalf of the 2.6 million-member American Legion, I am stating my concern about your April 7 report, “Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence and Recruitment.”

First, I want to assure you that The American Legion has long shared your concern about white supremacist and anti-government groups. In 1923, when the Ku Klux Klan still yielded unspeakable influence in this country, The American Legion passed Resolution 407. It resolved, in part, “…we consider any individual, group of individuals or organizations, which creates, or fosters racial, religious or class strife among our people, or which takes into their own hands the enforcement of law, determination of guilt, or infliction of punishment, to be un-American, a menace to our liberties, and destructive to our fundamental law…”

The best that I can say about your recent report is that it is incomplete. The report states, without any statistical evidence, “The possible passage of new restrictions on firearms and the return of military veterans facing significant challenges reintegrating into their communities could lead to the potential emergence of terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists capable of carrying out violent attacks.”

The American Legion is well aware and horrified at the pain inflicted during the Oklahoma City bombing, but Timothy McVeigh was only one of more than 42 million veterans who have worn this nation’s uniform during wartime. To continue to use McVeigh as an example of the stereotypical “disgruntled military veteran” is as unfair as using Osama bin Laden as the sole example of Islam.

Your report states that “Rightwing extremists were concerned during the 1990s with the perception that illegal immigrants were taking away American jobs through their willingness to work at significantly lower wages.” Secretary Napolitano, this is more than a perception to those who have lost their job. Would you categorize union members as “Right Wing extremists”?

In spite of this incomplete, and, I fear, politically-biased report, The American Legion and the Department of Homeland Security share many common and crucial interests, such as the Citizen Corps and disaster preparedness. Since you are a graduate of New Mexico Girls State, I trust that you are very familiar with The American Legion. I would be happy to meet with you at a time of mutual convenience to discuss issues such as border security and the war on terrorism. I think it is important for all of us to remember that Americans are not the enemy. The terrorists are.

Sincerely,

David K. Rehbein
National Commander
The American Legion

Wait; it gets better. This now from Michelle Malkin:

Also note that the unnamed “prominent civil rights organization” that the DHS hit job cites to stoke anti-military paranoia is the left-wing Southern Poverty Law Center — which designated the American Legion a “hate group” for its pro-enforcement stance on immigration law.

Yes, so the DHS report is relying on the views of a left-wing, so-called “civil rights organization” that believes the enforcement of American law constitutes hateful activity. We’re all hateful, rightwing extremists now.

Obama Insults Disabled on Leno; Updated

Remember when I said that Barack Obama’s appearance on Leno may end up backfiring? The probability of that just went up exponentially. Jake Tapper of ABC News reports that our dear president insulted the disabled during his interview.

President Obama, in his taping with Jay Leno Thursday afternoon, attempted to yuk it up with the funnyman, and ended up insulting the disabled.

Towards the end of his approximately 40-minute appearance, the president talked about how he’s gotten better at bowling and has been practicing in the White House bowling alley.

He bowled a 129, the president said.

“That’s very good, Mr. President,” Leno said sarcastically.

It’s “like the Special Olympics or something,” the president said.

Trashy. Obama’s teleprompter and the White House declined to comment.

Update: And now we have comment:

“The president made an off-hand remark making fun of his own bowling that was in no way intended to disparage the Special Olympics,” White House deputy press secretary Bill Burton said. “He thinks the Special Olympics is a wonderful program that gives an opportunity for people with disabilities from around the world.”

Clearly. That’s why he compared someone who is bad at a sport to the Special Olympics. Because he in no way wanted to disparage the program. If you’re going to spin, at least spin well.

Update X2: Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey adds:

You know how you can tell when a President has a bad day?  When his comparison of an American corporation to terrorists is the second-stupidest thing he said…

The Anchoress:

I wonder if NBC will edit that out, for Obama. Nothing would surprise me.

Sigh. One almost gets tired of saying it, but one must say it, still: Can you IMAGINE what the press and the Dems would do with that, had Bush said it. Can you IMAGINE what the press and the Dems would have done with the Irish PM Teleprompter gaffe (the press has helpfully embargoed the video, so Obama doesn’t have to see it playing 24/7, as Bush would have – had Bush so gaffed). Can you IMAGINE what the press and the Dems would have done if Bush had given the Prime Minister of Great Britain a lousy pack of 50 “Classic” DVD’s that didn’t work in the UK?

I’m sure we’ll find out if NBC tries to do some clean-up for The One. Wouldn’t surprise me, either.

Michelle Malkin:

Way to go, Soul Fixer.

I’ll Believe It’s a Crisis When Obama Treats It Like One

Perhaps that’s a bit too harsh. I do believe we’re in an economic crisis. That’s pretty much an undeniable fact at this point. But it’d be nice if the man in the White House actually began treating it as one outside of his stump speeches pushing for a trillion-dollar pork-laden spending bill.

After warning that we had no time to waste and that failing to pass porkulus would send us into a recession from which we’d never emerge, President Obama and the First Lady put off signing the very same bill so they could have a weekend off in Chicago. Apparently the American people can’t wait another day for Congress to debate the elements of the legislation, but they can wait for the Obamas to finish their personal outings in the Windy City.

Which brings us to another point. Where is the personal sacrifice from the Obamas we were told we’d have to make? Remember this?

“We can’t drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times … and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK,” Obama said.

That’s not leadership. That’s not going to happen,” he added.

So keeping our homes at a comfortable temperature isn’t leadership? Really? Because we know that President Obama isn’t freezing off his gnads at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

The capital flew into a bit of a tizzy when, on his first full day in the White House, President Obama was photographed in the Oval Office without his suit jacket. There was, however, a logical explanation: Mr. Obama, who hates the cold, had cranked up the thermostat.

“He’s from Hawaii, O.K.?” said Mr. Obama’s senior adviser, David Axelrod, who occupies the small but strategically located office next door to his boss. “He likes it warm. You could grow orchids in there.”

So if Obama likes it warm in his house it’s just dandy. But if you or I want to keep our homes at a comfortable temperature it shows a lack of leadership in the world. And that’s not acceptable.

Perhaps President Obama can take some time away from his nights on the town, swanky cocktail parties with expensive steaks at the White House, and eating at the Oprah chef-run restaurant in Chicago to recognize his hypocrisy. Sacrifice and swift action for thee, but not for me.

Marines Greet Obama in Hawaii…With Silence

Respectful as is expected, but absent the usual clapping and cheering one comes to expect. Sometimes silence can be louder than words.

President-elect Obama stopped by the Marine Corps base in Hawaii Kaneche Bay where servicemen and -women were eating Christmas dinner in Kailua Thursday evening.

“Just wanted to say hi, hey guys,” Obama said as he walked into the Anderson dining hall which was decked out in Christmas decorations.

The diners represented seven military units — Marine and Navy — some of whom were joined by their families for Christmas dinner.

As Obama entered the room, it was absent of the regular fanfare of cheering and clapping. The diners were polite, staying seated at their respective tables and waited for the president-elect to come to them to stand up.

ABC News says that the President-elect didn’t eat with the uniformed men and women. He visited for an hour then had dinner at the $9 million beach home that he’s renting for the holidays.

Pelosi: Obama Sent by God to Lead Us

Funny how selectively the left makes fun of extreme religious-related statements. If a righty does it, it makes you a Bible-thumping idiot. If a lefty does it to tell us of the coming of Obamassiah, it’s just acknowledging “reality”.

“I will win. Don’t worry about that,” he said to the crowd of about 1,300 at his third event of the evening, according to the pool report.

He was warmly received by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who called him “a leader that God has blessed us with at this time.”

He then reverts back to blaming the oppostion for supposedly attempting to make Americans afraid of him because of his “funny name”. Someone’s using scare tactics to raise money and support, but it’s not the Republicans.

The Illinois senator said it is “a testament to the American spirit that I’m even standing here before you” as the Democratic Party’s presumed nominee, because some Americans are “still getting past” his name, which he said some consider funny.

“Change is always tough, and electing me is change … and it means that people are going to hesitate a little bit,” Obama told a crowd of about 200 deep-pocketed supporters at a VIP reception for South Asian and Pacific Islander supporters at the Fairmont Hotel.

Later, speaking to a dinner crowd of about 350, Obama sought to reassure Democrats, whom he said typically “get nervous and skittish right around this time” and worry that attacks and mudslinging will begin in the final weeks of the presidential race. Obama campaign workers said the $7.8 million was a record for a political fundraiser.

“They say, ‘Oh no, here the Republicans come,’ ” he said, adding that some think “it’s hard enough – Obama, it’s a funny name, and who knows what they’re (the Republicans) going to do?”

Pathetic. If you oppose Obama, it must be because you’re afraid of his name or are simply racist. And those nasty Republicans are going to start using race-based or name-based attacks any day now against the man sent by God. That being said, David will now be passing around the collection basket.

Obama: Let’s Create a Civilian Security Force as Powerful as the Military

And as well funded as our Armed Services, too, says the Messiah. Besides the warranted apprehensions of a domestic security force with as much power as a military, is he aware of how large a budget our Armed Forces have? The DoD’s budget is close to half-a-trillion now, though Obama says he wants to cut it by getting rid of unnecessary items like a NATO-endorsed missile shield built to protect us from nuclear weapons.

Exactly how much of a military budget cut is he looking at, if that is the case?

“[W]e are going to grow our foreign service, open consulates that have been shuttered and double the size of the Peace Corps by 2011 to renew our diplomacy,” said Obama. “We cannot to continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we have set. We have got to have a civilian national security force that is just as powerful, just as strong, just as well funded.

Obama doesn’t specificy exactly what this well-funded, extremely powerful civilian security force would do, leaving one’s mind to wonder. We’re talking about the same politician who, according to his own wife, “will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual” and “will require you to work”.

Scary.
