Obama: We Can’t Drive Our SUVs, Expect Other Countries Are Going to Say OK

So I’m assuming that Obama won’t use an SUV as president, correct? And Congressional Democrats, including the chauffeured Nancy Pelosi, are all prepared to drive around in Priuses, right? Or are only certain people required to give stuff up?

Pitching his message to Oregon’s environmentally-conscious voters, Obama called on the United States to “lead by example” on global warming, and develop new technologies at home which could be exported to developing countries.

“We can’t drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times … and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK,” Obama said.

“That’s not leadership. That’s not going to happen,” he added.

Obama, for the record, drives an SUV hybrid. His previous car of choice was the Chrysler 300, but he gave that up when his eco-hypocrisy was exposed. Speaker Pelosi, another global warming alarmist, immediately demanded a large plane capable of a non-stop trip to California when she took office. She’s been known to get around town in a 2005 Chevy Tahoe.

Perhaps Obama should concentrate on his own habits, as well as those of his dear friends, before telling Americans they can’t keep their homes at 72 degrees.

Team Obama Flattered By Hamas’ Remarks

As I posted yesterday, the terror group Hamas has endorsed Barack Obama. They compare Obama to JFK, say they believe he can change America, and believe he has great principles. For most normal people, the endorsement by a terrorist group isn’t something one would tout.

Team Obama, on the other hand, is flattered.

“I like John Kennedy too,” Axelrod said. “That’s about the only thing we have in common with this gentleman from Hamas. We all agree that John Kennedy was a great president, and it’s flattering when anybody says that Barack Obama would follow in his footsteps.”

Er, “gentleman from Hamas”? It’s a terror group, Mr. Axelrod. Michael Goldfarb notes Axelrod’s attempt to tread safely:

Note the slipperiness. Axelrod first distances himself from the “gentleman from Hamas,” but in the next breath he embraces the gentleman/terrorists’ comparison to Kennedy, pronouncing it “flattering.” Only recently Obama declared that “nobody has spoken out more fiercely on the issue of anti-Semitism than I have.” Apparently there’s an exception for when anti-Semites compare Obama to Kennedy. Then all bets are off!

Obama’s church also happened to reprint an article by Hamas on the Mid-East crisis.

By the way, NiceDeb looks into the disturbing trend of terrorist and dictator endorsements of the Messiah. It includes everyone from Castro to FARC. Just think: Our next president may be Castro-approved!

PA Coal-Powered Power Plants to Close Thanks to Obama Regulations

Five coal-powered power plants in Pennsylvania will now close thanks to new regulations by the Obama Administration.

GenOn Energy Inc. plans to close five of its older coal-fired power plants in Pennsylvania over the next four years.

The company, based in Houston, said Wednesday that tough new environmental rules make it unprofitable to operate the plants, which generate a total of 3,140 megawatts of electricity. The plants are in Portland, Shawville, Titus, New Castle and Elrama. Two plants in Ohio and one in New Jersey will also be closed. The company said the timeframes are subject to further review based on market conditions.

Hey, at least he’s living up to his 2008 promise to bankrupt coal-powered power plants. “Obama lives up to a promise” is a rare enough headline to justify notation.

Obama Fires Americorps IG Who Investigated Friend

The Associated Press reports this morning what we had long expected: President Obama has brought his Chicago Machine politics with him to the White House. According to the newswire, Obama has fired the inspector general of Americorps after he began looking a little too closely at a friend of the president’s:

President Barack Obama says he has lost confidence in the inspector general who investigates AmeriCorps and other national service programs and has told Congress he is removing him from the position.

Obama’s move follows an investigation by IG Gerald Walpin of Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, who is an Obama supporter and former NBA basketball star, into the misuse of federal grants by a nonprofit education group that Johnson headed.

Walpin was criticized by the acting U.S. attorney in Sacramento for the way he handled an investigation of Johnson and St. HOPE Academy, a nonprofit group that received hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal grants from the Corporation for National Community Service. The corporation runs the AmeriCorps program.

Yes, because if there’s anything Obama can’t stand, it’s having a supposedly incompetent IG at, er, Americorps. According to Byron York, the White House called Walprin and told him to resign within the hour or get fired. Suddenly, after calls to Congress, the WH appeared to back off:

After last night’s call, Walpin got in touch with Congress, and it appears the White House has backed off, at least for now.  This afternoon, Republican Sen. Charles Grassley, who is something of a guardian angel for inspectors general, fired off a letter to the White House about the affair.

“I was troubled to learn that last night your staff reportedly issued an ultimatum to the AmeriCorps Inspector General Gerald Walpin that he had one hour to resign or be terminated,” Grassley wrote.  “As you know, Inspectors General were created by Congress as a means to combat waste, fraud, and abuse and to be independent watchdogs ensuring that federal agencies were held accountable for their actions.  Inspectors General were designed to have a dual role reporting to both the President and Congress so that they would be free from undue political pressure.  This independence is the hallmark of all Inspectors General and is essential so they may operate independently, without political pressure or interference from agencies attempting to keep their failings from public scrutiny.”

Grassley said he was “deeply troubled” by the Walpin matter and closed by asking the president “to review the Inspector General Reform Act you cosponsored and to follow the letter of the law should you have cause to remove any Inspector General.”

President Obama doesn’t like the fact that Walpin had investigated one of his high-profile donors corruption, so figured he’d just remove him from the post. A note to future IGs: If you dare investigate Obama’s political allies, be prepared to search for new employment. He won’t tolerate the holding of his allies’ feet to the fire.

Update: Youth Today has more information. It would appear that Walpin was blowing the whistle:

The inspector general (IG) of the Corporation for National and Community Service is being removed by President Barack Obama, a week after the IG questioned the eligibility of the largest and most expensive AmeriCorps program, and while the IG was contesting the “propriety” of a settlement made with a mayor for alleged misuse of AmeriCorps funds.

…Funding for the largest AmeriCorps program – the Teaching Fellows Program, run by the Research Foundation of the City University of New York – is in abeyance pending resolution of widespread problems identified in a recent audit. Although Walpin recommended that funding be curtailed and that previous funds (perhaps as much as $75 million) be repaid to the corporation, the corporation has said it will take no action on that matter.

Walpin concluded that nothing was being gained by the grants to CUNY and that the money was simply being used to subsidize an existing and funded program.

Obama: Leave My Wife Alone

If his wife wasn’t out aggressively campaigning on his behalf, I’d probably agree. However, she can attack us and say whatever she’d like on his behalf, but we can’t even criticize those statements? And political ads that use her actual words are “low class”?

In a preview of what the couple may face in the fall, the Tennessee Republican Party unveiled a four-minute online video Thursday, coinciding with Michelle Obama’s visit to the state for a Democratic Party event. The ad mocked her “proud” remarks from earlier in the year.

The video featured Tennesseans saying why they were proud of America, while repeatedly cutting to Michelle Obama’s comments that she was proud of America “for the first time in my adult life.”

For Barack Obama, the advertisements went too far.

“If they think that they’re going to try to make Michelle an issue in this campaign, they should be careful, because that I find unacceptable — the notion that you start attacking my wife or my family,” he said.

“For them to try to distort or to play snippets of her remarks in ways that are unflattering to her I think is just low class and I think they — most of the American people would think that as well,” he said. “I would never think of going after somebody’s spouse in a campaign.”

Yes, how horrible it would be for Republicans to go after a Democratic candidate’s family. I mean, it’s never like Dems went after Bush and Cheney’s children in 2004…oh, nevermind. That’s really beside the point, though.

She made the statement that she hadn’t been proud of America in her adult life at a rally in Madison, Wisconsin. She was out there trying to win over votes for her husband, giving speeches and pressing flesh. But she’s off limits from criticism?

If Barry doesn’t want his wife criticized for her actual words, maybe he shouldn’t have her out there campaigning for him. In the meantime, she’ll be criticized for the speeches she gives at political rallies.

State Department has spent $70,000 buying copies of Barack Obama’s book

The State Department has spent $70,000 in taxpayer money to buy copies of Barack Obama’s book Dreams from My Father. One embassy in Indonesia spent more than $3,800 buying copies of Obama’s other book The Audacity of Hope. Again, all with taxpayer money — all while Obama profits from the purchases.

But hey, it most be common place to buy books written by presidents to hand out as gifts and put in libraries, right? Nope. A search by the Washington Times of the federal database found no examples of the State Department purchasing books by President Clinton or President Bush. And most copies of Obama’s books were purchased in the months following his inauguration.

The State Department defends the waste of taxpayer money:

But State Department spokesman Noel Clay said the book purchases followed regular government procurement rules. He said diplomats have long used books as a way to help broker talks on important foreign policy matters.

“The structure and the presidency of the United States is an integral component of representing the United States overseas,” Mr. Clay said. “We often use books to engage key audiences in discussions of foreign policy.”

He also said books are purchased to stock the State Department’s “information resource centers,” which he said are located around the world and provide books about the U.S. covering issues such as culture, history and values.

“We also provide key library collections with books about the United States,” he said.

Ah, so that’s why they’re buying books by President Clinton, right? He was a popular two-term president who has since established a major charity and joined with other presidents — including President Bush — to raise money for disaster victims. Surely his book could provide insight into the United States, our values, and to engage key global audiences — many of which still love Clinton.

And yet…nope. Instead the State Department is spending tens of thousands of dollars buying copies of political and childrens books written by Barack Obama — a part-term president with low job approval, little in the way of accomplishments, and unlikely to be reelected. Funny how his books are supposed to provide value but Clinton’s or Bush’s aren’t. How convenient.

Wikileaks: Obama Gave Up British Nuclear Secrets to Russia

President Barack Obama agreed to hand over British nuclear secrets to the Russians in order to convince them to agree to the New START treaty, according to documents released by Wikileaks. The Telegraph reports:

Information about every Trident missile the US supplies to Britain will be given to Russia as part of an arms control deal signed by President Barack Obama next week.

Defence analysts claim the agreement risks undermining Britain’s policy of refusing to confirm the exact size of its nuclear arsenal.

The fact that the Americans used British nuclear secrets as a bargaining chip also sheds new light on the so-called “special relationship”, which is shown often to be a one-sided affair by US diplomatic communications obtained by the WikiLeaks website.

Classified transmissions between U.S. negotiators and Washington show that betraying the British was key to securing Russian support for the START treaty, which limits the ability of the United States to defend itself while allowing the Russians to continue stockpiling nuclear weapons.

In fact, Obama’s team asked London in 2009 to willingly hand over British nuclear secrets to the Russians. When London refused, Obama handed over information the U.S. possessed about our ally’s nuclear program.

No one should be surprised by the Obama Administration’s lack of interest in the Angl0-American special relationship. Whether it’s giving the Prime Minister a set of 25 DVDs that don’t work, giving back a bust of Winston Churchill, or disregarding protocol while visiting Her Majesty, the Obama Administration has been kicking the UK since day one.

NewSouth Books Responds to My Blog Post

NewSouth Books, which has decided to edit-out the racial slurs which appear in Mark Twain literature, has responded to my blog post in the comments section:

We understand there are strong feelings about this; we feel strongly too about the sanctity of literature, and opposing censorship.

What is perhaps unclear in the article above is that this edition is not meant to pretend as though the offensive language doesn’t exist; rather there is a detailed introduction included in this volume that addresses the language, its historical context, and the ongoing debate in schools as to whether or not to teach Twain’s work because of the language. No reader can read this book without facing the question of including or excluding the language; this book is about the language question, not hiding from it.

If the publication sparks good debate about how language impacts learning and/or about the nature of censorship or the way racial slurs exercise their baneful influence, then our mission in publishing this new edition of Twain’s works will be more emphatically fulfilled. We encourage everyone to read an excerpt from Dr. Gribben’s introduction at http://www.newsouthbooks.com/twain. Thanks!

That brings up another question: If the publisher finds it acceptable to confront the language head-on, why not place the note in the front of the book  and then leave the original text alone?

The publisher has apparently decided that instead of reading the original, classic Twain text, kids should be told something controversial exists and then read the watered-down, PC version. The publisher is still censuring the text rather than allowing students to read the original work and confront reality.

A note in the front of the book doesn’t change that.

Juan Williams Fired by NPR for Admitting Normalcy

He admitted to Bill O’Reilly that he personally gets nervous if he sees obvious Muslims on the plane with him. So NPR, home to cartoonists who like to slam tea partiers by referring to them in sexually derogative terms, fired him.

This is what Williams said on FOX News:

Well, actually, I hate to say this to you because I don’t want to get your ego going. But I think you’re right. I think, look, political correctness can lead to some kind of paralysis where you don’t address reality.

I mean, look, Bill, I’m not a bigot. You know the kind of books I’ve written about the civil rights movement in this country. But when I get on the plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous.

NPR’s response:

NPR said in its statement that the remarks “were inconsistent with our editorial standards and practices, and undermined his credibility as a news analyst with NPR.”

But supporting cartoonists who call limited government protesters “tea baggers” is just fine? Screw you, NPR.

Guess what, you bunch of latte-sipping, New York Times-reading, Prius-driving jackasses? Most Americans get nervous when people dressed in Muslim garb board their plane. That’s not nice? Tough crap. It’s the truth. But apparently truth is not a respected value at NPR.

Via Drew.

More: Via MM, more hypocrisy from the taxpayer-funded NPR.

Worth noting: NPR affiliate employee Sarah Spitz at public radio station KCRW wishes death on Rush Limbaugh…not a firing offense.

Oh, and hey, NPR just received a $1.8 million donation from billionaire leftist financier George Soros. I’m sure that has nothing to do with the fact that people who insult conservatives are kept while those who admit to having the same feelings as most Americans are ditched.

Poll: Marco Rubio Gaining Ground in FL Senate Race

Flip-flopper Charlie Crist and far-leftist Kendrick Meek are now in a race for second place in the Florida Senate race. That according to a new poll from Mason-Dixon. Conservative Marco Rubio is building on his lead and remains on the path to victory.

A statewide poll released Saturday night shows Republican Marco Rubio building on his lead over independent challenger Charlie Crist, while Democrat Kendrick Meek appears to be closing in on Crist in the closely-watched contest.

Rubio is favored by 40 percent of likely voters, up from 38 percent last month; Crist’s support has dwindled to 28 percent from 33 percent, according to the Mason-Dixon Research & Associates survey of 625 likely Florida voters. The margin of error is plus/minus 4 percentage points.

The poll found that Meek is gaining on Crist, with his support rising sharply to 23 percent of likely voters, up from 18 percent. Nine percent are undecided.

Why is Crist fading? Democrats are abandoning him for Meek, while Independents are shifting to Rubio and Meek.

To have 40 percent support “in a three-way race is a very strong position to hold,” said Coker.

“Rubio, in fact, only needs to gain 2-3 points to wrap up the race,” he said. “The only way Rubio could lose is if the support for Crist or Meek dropped under 15 percent. That could happen, but it would require an almost total abandonment by Democrats from Crist to Meek, or vice-versa.”

The poll surveyed likely voters — a more reliable base than registered voters.

This is obviously good news but the race isn’t over yet. Now isn’t the time to stay home or turn down the heat. You can help Rubio here.
